Time slot switching for integrated services in fiber optic PBX/LAN

چکیده
A new medium access prolocol called time slot switching (TSS) is proposed for use in optical fiber local area networks. This protocol incorporales features of time division, space division, and time compression for users to share a common medium. VLSI CMOS electrical crosspoints are used to switch traffic within individual time slots. Wilh these features, data, voice, and video services can all be combined in a single network, In addition, the speed of the eleclronics can be maximized to match the available optical bandwidth. Operational principles of the TSS protocol are explained. A performance analysis is presented to show the tradeoffs among traffic capacity, frame guard time, blocking probability, and transmission delay. The analysis is done for 64 Kbit/s channels, and the results show that TSS is more attractive than broadcast protocols for voice traffic or constant-rate data traffic. An approach to integrating voice, data, and video traffic within TSS is also described.

A New Optical Cell Switching Paradigm
Most of the existing all-optical switching paradigms assume different wavelengths are switched independently, and hence require W switching planes at each core switch, where W is the number of wavelengths that an optical fiber can carry. As W is becoming as large as a few hundreds in the near future, the above requirement limits the scalability of core switches. In this paper, we present a nove...
متن کاملDynamic time-deterministic traffic in a fiber-optic WDM star network
A number of protocols for WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) star networks have been proposed. However, the area of real-time protocols for these networks is quite unexplored. In this paper, a real-time protocol, based on TDM (Time Division Multiplexing), for fiber-optic star networks is presented. By the use of WDM, multiple Gb/s channels are achieved. Services for both guarantee-seeking m...
متن کاملPrinciples of Network Management
Telecommunications networks have become essential to the day-to-day activities of the enterprise and individuals. Many corporations, agencies, universities, and other institutions now rely on voice, data (e.g., facsimile transmission, electronic funds transfer), and video (e.g., video teleconferencing) services to ensure their growth and survival. This trend will accelerate as personal communic...
متن کاملA Switching Technique for Voice Communication over Existing Copper Infrastructure
In this paper a technique for the switching of voice communication over existing cabling is described. For example, an existing physical layer like the power grid infrastructure of a building can be used for voice transmission. The hardware implementation and the associated protocol implemented on a microprocessor are described. For such a preinstalled physical medium, the use of a voice commun...
